Yet not as we generally know it.
With the Tree Joke video I make a nod to the Lacan theory.
We rely heavily on the visual and literary world to inform us. To tell us what we think we know about life in accordance to what we are taught to know and have learned ourselves of life. In fact what we can learn ourselves from childhood may become contrived somewhat, filtered.
And what if, we do not see clearly? Our vision say, may also be obscured?
Signing allows for a certain revealing of the layers of such obscurity. For the likes of one untrained in signing, to focus solely on the fluidity of the very adept Tree Joke performer as she ‘acts language’, takes knowledge, into a different arena. An arena of more possibilities than are actually being presented. Into the realm of the imaginary. Into the creative space of possibility. Language itself is an act.
We rely heavily on the visual sense, and yet if such sense should fail us, or we fail it even, then what then, say, if our ears should misinform us?

Take notice of how you are effected in Russian, and how that effect may resound at the moment of English translation.
It is this point of translation/ interpretation which interests me in The Art of Utopia. This new awakening. This endless realm of possibilities both before, and after? literal translation to visual/ language occurs. The language with no labels, the language of no place, that very place where children play and are the masters of their own universe. Empowered, explorative… The dawn before time, the point before the mirror stage that Lacan refers to, before the child is possessed and hypnotized by artificial representations of reality.
I am currently drawing up designs of installation and interactive art works. Works that deal with the senses and with the concept of emptiness/ phenomenology.
